Ideas for celebrating Mother’s Day in Torquay

3 January 2024

Are you stuck for new Mother’s Day ideas this year? This Mother’s Day falls on Sunday 19th March and we have some great ideas on how to celebrate with your Mum.

Mother’s Day – The Facts!

Mothering Sunday in the UK is celebrated on the fourth Sunday in Lent. The celebration has taken place since around the 16th century. Apparently it was also known as “Refreshment Sunday”, “Pudding Pie Sunday” or “Mid Lent Sunday”. It was the only day during Lent when the fasting rules were relaxed in honour of the “Feeding of the 5000”, the story from the Christian Bible. No-one really seems sure of exactly how the name of Mothering Sunday came about. One theory is that the celebration could have been adopted from a Roman spring festival celebrating Cybele, their Mother Goddess. These days we tend to know it as Mother’s Day.
